Bill and I just got back from the most awesome weekend ever. in which we attended the wedding of riki_kiki_taco me as co-maid of honor and he as sexy in a suit guy. the wedding was awesome and about 500 times more festive than mine, (mostly due to the fact that Lee's family REALLY likes to dace, and that over half those in attendance were Oswego alumni) the fun included a rousing game of volleyball with the bride in her wedding dress, and me getting all weepy over their first dance. also, Bill and I got plenty of slow dancing in, he rocks. Bill also took like 5000 pictures, and will posting them eventually so keep an eye out. then today before heading home Bill took me out on a date at the Rosemont Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park. where we spent hours wandering around checking out all the cool critters and taking pictures and just plain enjoying ourselves. we even watched feeding time at the penguin exhibit. then we headed home. and we found a new birds nest on out bathroom window. no eggs yet, but none the less, awesome! like I said, awesome weekend. now I need to go collapse. I hope everybody has an awesome night and awesome new years day in the morning. may all you wishes come true in the coming year, and may all you troubles melt away. Snow Song (It's Coming Down)from Striking 12 by groovelily (one of the most awesome Cd's ever by one of the most awesome bands out there, go buy their stuff) © Brendan Milburn, Rachel Sheinkin & Valerie Vigoda Snowflakes fall like velvet From iron-colored skies Somehow I can’t help it I feel my spirits rise Street lamps aglow Time to take it slow It’s coming down Crystal branches glisten Like diamonds over me Frozen in position A silent symphony Sidewalks white and clean Perfect and pristine It’s coming down It’s coming down and all my blues disappear And this old town is young again— Roll back the years Because the world looks like new Or at least that’s the view from here... It’s cold here by the river But I don’t feel it much The moon’s a silver sliver Close enough to touch Storm clouds drift away A star comes out to play And it’s coming down *** It’s coming down and all my blues disappear And this old town is young again — roll back the years Because the world looks like new Or at least that’s the view from here Snowflakes fall like velvet From iron-colored skies Somehow I can’t help it I feel my spirits rise Snowflakes glint and glide Glad to be outside On the first day On the first day ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE YEAR Tags: happyears, holidays Current Mood: cheerful What's Playing?: Striking 12 - Groovelilly

Today is Christmas Eve (duh) In an hour or so Bill and I will be leaving for my parent's house where I will slave away in the kitchen to help mom make an awesome dinner then were will open presents and eat and eat and eat. We decided to have Christmas with my family on Christmas Eve because mom not only had to work in the morning but it makes it much easier for use to take Cayenne to Bill's parents. (Cayenne doesn't like company, and Bill's parents get a lot of visitors on Christmas day, and hardly any on Christmas Eve) I can't wait, I'll be able to finally Visit with my cousin and her new beau. I haven't seen her in forever, and it will be nice to catch up. She just recently moved in to an apartment with him, and has actually been cooking meals and stuff (this is a big thing for her) so I got her some cook books for Christmas. I made my mother a spa kit, with a hand knit face cloth, a microwave rice bag hot pad thingy with a hand knit cover, hand made bath bombs handmade soap from one of our favorite vendors (gotsoap.com) and a little candle I picked up at Michael's. I took a Clementine box and covered it with fabric and put everything inside, it looks really neat. For grandma, I decided to give her a beret I had knit, she seemed to like it a lot when I wore it into town and it looked good on her, so it's now hers, I also bought her a really spiffy cat pin from Etsy and an beautiful pair of earrings for another seller on Etsy. My dad was the hardest to get something for, I found a cute little button on Etsy that says "I kiss my basset hound on the lips" but it wasn't enough (although I did make a really spiffy origami box for it out of scrapbook paper) we ended up just getting him a borders gift card to complete the gift. I feel bad but I never know what to get him, and he does love books, so it's not like it's a waste. Ah well. I hope everybody has an awesome Christmas eve and Christmas day! We here at the platypus nest often shun convenience store bought spice mixes, in favor of making our own with fresh and freshly ground spices. Things taste more vibrant and we have the option of doing a different small batch each time, and customizing them directly to our tastes. Bill makes almost all the spice mixes he uses in cooking our dinners. There are a few he doesn't make, like sambar powder, which has far too many ingredients, (some of which we don't have access to individually) but you would be hard pressed to find any other pre mixed spices in our spice cupboard. In fact one of our staple 'cook books' is the Spice and Herb Bible by Ian HemphillWhile Bill makes the savory spice mixes, I love to go for the things like pumpkin and apple pie spice. We don't use it very often during the rest of the year, so we've had a little container of it, almost untouched from last year in our fridge for a while (we refrigerate all of our fresh spice mixes, it helps preserve them and slow down the release of the vital oils that make them so tasty), but with the cooler weather, apple cider season, and the seasonal pumpkin smoothies in the mornings, it has disappeared quickly this last month. So today I made a nice large batch, as I like to throw an 1/8 of a teaspoon into my apple cider and warm it up for quick mulled cider, Bill throws it in the smoothies sometimes, especially when he makes pumpkin smoothies, and I suspect that he may be making gingerbread soon, which will also use some of the spice, and I plan on making a pie or two for thanksgiving time. Of course I'm a bit of a klutz, so a little of the spices and the mix got spilled here and there, but that’s ok, because not the house smells lovely and autumnal and spicy. We told my parents about the engagement tonight at new years dinner. (we got free champagne! Thank you Tasha!) I was so nervous; my stomach was in knots all night, I'm so glad Bill was there to keep me calm. I shouldn't have been nervous though... my mothers response? "Finally!! So when should I expect my grand child? Let's see, you'll be 26, that will leave you with at least 4 good childbearing years." :: facepalm :: ah well. Everything went well; I think they were impressed that we already had a lot of the major planning done. All we really need to worry about at the details. And we still have a year and a half to go. (oh yeah, and it seams that my parents are going to help with most of the monetary needs too. That will be nice, although I still plan to not spend much, I don't want anything too extravagant.) Mom even really likes the dress I picked out, and is very excited about finding somebody to make it for me! (I feel like such a little girl, I want to play dress up.) And I have her already at work putting together a list of people to invite. I don't really think her A list will be anything close to ours. But if I at least I have a list of relatives etc. from her, I'll be sure to not forget somebody, which I would be bound to do if I were trying to compile it from memory. On Christmas eve, a long time ago, a gentle mother was busily cleaning the house for the most wonderful day of the year... Christmas day, the day on which Santa came to bless the house. Not a speck of dust was left. Even the spiders had been banished from their cozy corner on the ceiling. They had fled to the farthest corner of the attic. The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated. The poor spiders were frantic, for they could not see the tree, nor be present for Santa's visit. Then the oldest and wisest spider suggested that perhaps they could wait until everyone went to bed and then get a closer look. When the house was dark and silent, the spiders crept out of their hiding place. When they neared the Christmas tree, they were delighted with the beauty of it. The spiders crept all over the tree, up and down, over the branches and twigs and saw every one of the pretty things. The spiders loved the Christmas tree. All night long they danced in the branches, leaving them covered with spider webs. In the morning, when Santa came to bless the house, he was dismayed! He loved the little spiders for they were God's creatures, but he knew the mother, who had worked so hard to make everything perfect, would not be pleased when she saw what the spiders had done. With love in his heart and a smile on his lips, Santa reached out and gently touched the spider webs. The spider webs started to sparkle and shine! They had all turned into sparkling, shimmering silver and gold. According to legend, ever since this happened, people have hung tinsel on their Christmas trees. It has also become a custom to include a spider among the decorations on the Christmas tree. Tags: holidays Current Mood: cheerful

Bill and I went to the Clayton Cristmas parade today. It was fun, I was surprised by the length of the parade, and the turn out. I wasn't expecting so much from such a little town. The floats were cute, and I swear that the people in the parade bought a bag of candy per child watching. "Clayton Christmas parade: sponsored by the Clayton dental association" We saw an awesome little band called "The island band" those guys looked like they were having a ton of fun, and were incredibly entertaining. It made up for the TI marching band. Bill and I complained about that a bit. A good half the kids obviously didn't know the music. And a quarter of them had cheat sheets! That and they apparently couldn't figure out the slow march/march in place thing. And had absolutely no rhythm to their steps, they weren't marching to the music, or in synch with each other. When he was in marching band the director was much stricter and had much higher standards. And I'm used to Watertown where the band director was sadistic. I remember watching him make them go through all sorts of in synch marching maneuvers while playing in the parking lot during some of my more bring classes. I remember hair pin turns, high speed marching to slow dirges, and barely moving crawls marching to high tempo pop music. Ah well. All in all it was a fun day out. even if we nearly froze or toes off. :p Tags: holidays, outside Current Mood: chipper

- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.
- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.
- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.
Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:
- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.
You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.
There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special. ( the list )Tags: holidays, platypus nest Current Mood: calm

This has been one of the best valentine’s days I’ve ever had. And we didn’t even do anything valentines-y like. Just a nice date (my first real date ever). First oaksong came over and we hid upstairs while my parents put away groceries, apparently I impressed him with all my books. Then we came downstairs and I made bread (and got very messy) cut up a pineapple, and mom made us pizza. Then we ‘watched’ Mullholand Drive. (Don’t worry Linds and Brandon, I’ll make him actually watch it eventually). After that we headed out to dinner at the most AWESOME Thai restaurant. I would just like to say that I LOVE Thai iced tea. It’s like drinking desert. And the food was excellent. Then we went to the mall and I just HAD to buy a Thai cook book. Then I went over to EB to look for the games Aaron wanted. But I could only find one. :( (Momo, tell Aaron I bought Space Channel 5 for him, he doesn’t have to pay me back, it was only, like $3) Then we came back here and gave Duchess a bunch of loving. (I’m beginning to feel jealous; she likes oaksong better than me.) And tried some of the bread I made. I was slightly disappointed, it was very dense and not all that great. I think I’m going to give up on sour dough breads for a while and try doing whole wheat, and maybe plain Italian. Well I’m sleepy and should probably head to bed, ‘specially considering I have to work tomorrow morning. Toodlies all! Tags: food, holidays, pets, platypus Current Mood: loved

Bored, bored, bored! I'm bored There's nothing really good on TV, and I've watched enough headline news to have the damned spiel memorized for the day. Maybe I'll put in a move, Witches of Eastwick sounds good. Went to the calling hours of a friend of my parents that dies recently, she used to live in a house down Hailey Street and was related to out next door neighbors, the Hailey's. I don't have much knitting for other people left to do, just have to finish Lindsay's scarf (I'm such a slacker) and start somebody else's, but I need the needles I'm using on the scarf to do them. I really don't want to start another project for myself until I'm finished with them. Blech. I wanna do something but there's really not much I can do because I can't go out. I want to go shopping, maybe pick up some more knitting needles. It's such a boring Sunday afternoon. Tags: beyond the veil, holidays, knitting Current Mood: bored

New Year's resolutions: 1) I WILL NOT begin any more knitting projects until I finish at least two of the projects already on the needles. This includes buying yarn. 2) I will still do the knitting challenge I posted about earlier, despite the recent goings on between me and the receiving party. 3) I will exercise and actually stick to it. 4) I will eat healthier than I have been. 5) As per 3 & 4 I will reach 200 lbs by my birthday (March 29) and be at least 160 (or lower) by the end of June, if not earlier. 6) I will have a job. 7) I will save money, but also make a better effort to actually spend time with my friends in Oswego and other places outside of Watertown. 8) I will read more. There are more I will probably think of later. But really I don't have to (and shouldn't) wait until the new year to make resolutions to better myself. So just because they aren't listed here doesn't mean I won't/can't hold to them. Tags: bodywork, bookworm, holidays, knitting, money, work Current Mood: optimistic

Went to Public Health to get my meningitis shot today (bugger cost $75!) Because I still have the drains in I had to wear a skirt to go out, so I wore my long black flowy skirt and a matching black velvety/lacy shirt. And my black high top all stars. (very gothic looking) Anyways, the line was HUGE, because a lot of parents were brining their kids in for flue shots. So while I'm waiting I whip out my knitting and go at it while I wait. Boy I tell you, knitting gothic chicks get some weird looks from stressed out mothers with little kids. On another note, I go in tomorrow to get the rest of my stitches out, and maybe my drains, (but I don't think they will be ready, I'm still draining a lot of fluid, I may have to wait until after the new year when my surgeon come back from vacation.) Also mom got us reservations for 5:00 new year's eve at Cavalario's Cuchina! YAY! Soo yummy. And new year's day I get to try out a new recipe! Weee! Well today was a nice day. Not too many fights with mom and the family were relatively behaved. Although Tirsa kept trying to open everybody else's presents. :) (she really liked the book Monica gave me for her, had me read it, like 3 times) My parents surprised me and got me a nice black hip length leather coat. In "XL"! It looks so nice and I'm really happy. I NEVER thought they would buy me something like that (maybe the fact that it was on sale from $298 to $78 was a factor ;) I also got some nice sweaters and sweatshirts in smaller sizes that fit me now. Mom also got me a cute dragon ring to replace my snake ring that broke a few months back; they couldn't find another snake ring so they got the dragon instead. It's nice :) A bunch of people got me gif certificates for borders too :D get to buy lots of books! A few people just gave me money so I can get more new clothes once my weight evens out. Dinner went very nicely as well. I made a nice harvest vegetable casserole and everybody liked it, I'm glad, and I stuffed myself silly. :) I really tired myself out today though, and I fell asleep in my chair before everybody left, and they didn't wake me up! :: pout :: ah well. Well, I'm off to bed. Hope everybody had a good day! Tags: family, food, holidays Current Mood: sleepy

We had our usual Christmas Eve snack tonight; I warmed up some brie and cut up apples and other cheese and mom cut up croghan bologna for everybody else and more cheeses. We sat around to kitchen table talking and eating it was fun, and dad 'taught' the kitten a new trick. He now pats you on the arm if he wants something you are eating. And if you line food up along the table edge he'll pull it down one piece by one to eat, so cute! After that we went into the living room and watched Young Frankenstein and I finished knitting a dishcloth for my Aunt Mary, I'm giving a bunch of them to her tomorrow. She's been hording all her old worn out ones since she found out my great cousin Margie can't knit them any more. I still have to finish Knitting my Grandma Homan's other slipper, but I can do that tomorrow because we won't be able to visit them until later on in the week. (We are having people over all day tomorrow, and grandma and grandpa will be spending Christmas with one of mom's other siblings.) I still have to finish knitting Lindsay's scarf and Mel's present but I have until next semester begins because Monica will have to play Santa for me too and deliver them. Earlier today I cut up all the veggies I need for the casserole/stew that I am making for tomorrow's dinner so I can eat. There were a lot of veggies and stuff in it so that was the biggest part. Cooking shouldn't take too long and grandma dug out a special pot for me to use for it so I can cook it properly. Cool! This will be my first time cooking a real meal since the surgery, it feels good. I miss cooking its so therapeutic. Well gotta go wrap my aunt's dishcloths. Went shopping today. My first real trip out since the surgery It was very tiring but I'm glad. I was going stir crazy. I ware a skirt so I could pin my drains inside of it and nobody could see them. Dad and I got almost everything we needed in one trip. And it was relatively docile out, surprising for the Sunday before Christmas. I went to Gertrude Hawke and got people bunches of chocolate, and me and dad got mom a $100 gift certificate to her fav. Clothing store. She hasn't been able to get herself much new clothing lately. Afterwards we went to taco bell my fist soda since about 2 weeks before the surgery. Weee! When I got home I kind of just sat around and knit. Boring ol' me. Lalala. Oops, one of my drains is leaking, gotta go.... Tags: family, food, holidays, knitting, outside Current Mood: tired

After panicking about school and the surgery, I decided to start panicking about my Yule presents too. So here's a list: People I already have stuff for: Rachel, Dave, Monica (given early), Lindsay (1/2 done), Eric, Matt, Brandon, Mom. People I want to make stuff for: Mel, Lindsay (1/2 not done), Mom, Dad, Grandma & Grandpa Homan, Grandma Lambert, Tasha (can't decide), Alex, bunches of kitties. People I want to buy something for: Julia, Tasha (can't decide). Yep. And I think I've forgotten a bunch of people too, but his is off the top of my head, so don't feel offended if I did. That and some people I just don't know well enough to get you anything (nor can I afford much anyways) At least I'll have plenty of time to finish making stuff after my surgery. Just don't expect your Yule present till next semester, 'cus there's no way I'd be able to get it to you before hand. lalalalalalalaaaaaaaaa {edit} woops, forgot i already had somethign for mom, hehe, tryign to make things more dificult for myself ;) {/edit} Tags: family, friends, holidays, knitting Current Mood: busy

Mmmmm Naps = good Well off to work on the hat I'm knitting Dave for Yule. (he knows I'm knitting it for him, just not what it's going to look like when I'm done :: evil laughter :: ) its coming along relatively well. I can't wait for the needles I ordered to arrive so I can play with them! A 16" #8 circular needle, w/ #8 double pointed needles. And a 16" # 10 1/2 circular needle, w/ #10 1/2 double pointed needles. That means I can make hats and slippers, and all sorts of fun things! I really want to get started on grandma's slippers. Well off to eat! Food = good (I'm such a cat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat, play with yarn, sleep, eat.) Tags: friends, holidays, knitting Current Mood: chipper

Whoo boy was this weekend fun! I had a good time in school before I left; I wore my ears paws and tail with my cooking uniform (black pants so it still matched) and got quite a few positive responses. Then I rushed home and packed and got ready to go to Oswego. I left a little late and ended up forgetting the sleeping bad, but it was ok 'cus Monica was able to get an air mattress. Once I got there we hung out for a little bit and then headed over to dinner. Which was cool, I'm soo glad lakeside carried moosewood soups, it was way yummy. Then we went back to the room for a bit then headed out for the MTTB around 9 ish. MTTB: AWESOME! It was a lot of fun, a lot of people had some really neat-o costumes, last year there weren't any cats so that's what I went as this year, but of course like 5 million other girls did too. Blah. But it was still fun! Lindsay and Brandon and I danced some, and then they went off to watch Pirates of the Caribbean, but I wanted to stay and dance. So I danced. A lot. There was a lot of really great music (they played a lot of DDR stuff too, but that just made it easier to dance to ;). And dancing w Addison, Sean, and Chris was totally awesome. Those guys are really great to interact w/ on the floor, so much fun and energy. I loved mikes costume (yay Spider Jerusalem) and Sean was tres creative (if not very, very hot) The costume contest was very amusing, I really liked Justin's costume, and Scot Staab is the master of makeup and costuming, I loved it. Bree and her Bf (I'm sorry, I forgot his name) made an awesome pair as the goddess and horned god. Hmm... if I keep listing off cool costumes this is going to go on for miles. :D So I'll stop here and say there were a TON of great costumes, and mucho, mucho good music and I danced way too much, (so much I had trouble walking home, and walking the next day for that matter, I'm still sore.) and it was wicked fun and I can't wait until next year to do it all over again! If anybody wants to see pictures (I took a bunch, and so did other people) wander over to the STG yahoo group and take a peak. Had a meeting with my advisor today Whew, he made me feel all guilty for missing two classes. This is understandable, his job is to be sure that nothing like last semester happens and I actually go to class and do my work so I can get outta here with some good grades. So after my meeting I went to the library and caught up some on my reading for my ancient philosophy class, then I came back here so Nikkii could take me to Kraftees and I could get the other book I needed for that class (thank you Nikkii!!!) Now after dinner I’m going to have to go back to the library to finish off the last of the reading for that class, and catch up on the readings for my other classes. I’ve been falling behind some lately, I have a paper due tomorrow in my seminar, but I can do that tomorrow before class because I’ll have two hours in the library after ethics. And then I have two short essays for my philosophy class on Thursday, so I’ll need to work on that tomorrow night after dinner. I think that I’ve been having trouble concentrating on my studies lately, mostly because of several small little thing, like Nikkii getting staples in her head, Sean staying here for over a week longer than expected, and a bunch of us finally finding our own coven. It’s been kind of a hectic time. I just have to remind myself to not let it get in the way of my reading and writing for class. On a lighter note, a bunch of stuff from my parents arrived today, two Valentines cards, one from each of them, and two packages, wow! The cards were cute, although sometimes my mom has a really weird sense of humor :-/ and they also sent me some of those study guide things that you can put in your binders and stuff, three for English and one for philosophy. They also sent me a package full of peach body wash, lotion, and body spray from Avon. Ye gad! Mom had gotten me some really nice body was for Christmas but it was only a little candy cane shapes tube of it. The other day I had mentioned how I liked the smell of it, and she must have decided that meant I wanted a lot more of it! Hehe, oh well, I’m sure I’ll put it to some good use. They also sent me two cute little stuffed raccoons for Valentines Day, sooo cute! Ok... that’s enough for now. Toodlies!
